Once the whisky capital of the world — now small and mighty.
At its Victorian peak, Campbeltown — a remote town on the Kintyre peninsula — was home to more than thirty distilleries and billed itself the whisky capital of the world. Overproduction and changing tastes all but wiped it out; today just three distilleries keep the region alive.
That scarcity is part of the appeal. Springbank, Glen Scotia and Glengyle (whose whisky is bottled as Kilkerran) produce some of the most sought-after and distinctive malts in Scotland — proof that a region can survive on character alone.
